Julie was the first of the Fitzgerald children to take lessons in step dancing and fiddling. She won her very first competition at the Ontario Open at the age of six- after only 6 months of lessons! Over the years, she has garnered numerous awards in both fiddle and dance. She is a two-time Canadian Grand Masters Fiddle Champion and 2-time Ontario Open Step Dancing Champion.

Julie has a Bachelor of Music Degree from Humber College in Toronto where she pursued a degree in Jazz and Contemporary Music.  She has written fiddle tunes and enjoys arranging music for strings.  She was awarded the Ron Collier Memorial Scholarship for ‘exceptional promise as an arranger/composer’ at Humber College, as well as the recipient of New Venture Seed Fund, and Friendly Fire Pitch Competition for online & in-person dance instruction.

Julie has enjoyed a very extensive performing history. She toured across Canada with the Memories of a Don Messer Jubilee Show as guest dancer and 2nd fiddler when she was only 12 years old.  She has also had the opportunity to perform internationally with artists including Leahy, Stepcrew, Cherish the Ladies, Natalie MacMaster, We Banjo 3, Troy MacGillivray, Sharon Shannon, Dreamers Circus & Bowfire.

Julie has created an instructional step dance DVD. She also launched instructional step dance ‘online DVDs’ available via her website: http://juliefitzgerald.ca/online-step-dance-lessons/. Julie teaches dance and music classes in the Toronto and Peterborough area, and she has also taught step dance, fiddle and piano accompaniment at several camps across Canada (Algoma Trad, Smithers Music Camp, Leahy Music Camp, and Yukon Rendezvous Music Camp). Julie is passionate about her music and dancing, and is evident through her performances and workshops!

VARIOUS AND SUNDRY FACTS:

  • Hobbies include playing hockey, biking and swimming.
  • In highschool, she was an All-Ontario wrestler.
  • Although she’s a champion dancer, she’s slow as molasses when not on the dance floor.
  • Although she has travelled across Canada and the U.S. she has never seen the country- she’s a deep sleeper!
  • She has perfect pitch.
